A construction worker was engulfed in flames after his jackhammer pierced a live high-voltage underground electricity cable in Ukraine.

Ten of thousands of volts raced through the man’s body and even burnt his colleague who was standing next to him when the accident occurred.

The men had been laying a new electricity line in the city of Odessa and did not know how close they were to the previous cable.

Witnesses of the shocking incident say that the man who had burst into flames had his hands virtually melted and the generator the men were using also exploded.

Both of the workers were hospitalised and while one was treated for severe burns the other was seriously injured.

When the cable was cut it also caused a blackout in the district which lasted several hours.
