Construction worker in critical condition after cutting through power line in Newport Beach

A construction worker was critically injured after cutting through a power line and causing a small explosion Monday afternoon in Newport Beach.

Police and firefighters were called to the 3 p.m. incident on Via Lido and Via Oporto when people heard the noise of the explosion, said Sgt. John Thulin of the Newport Beach Police Department.

Thulin said the worker, who has not been identified, was taken to a local hospital and was in critical condition.

The explosion caused an outage for nearly 3,000 customers for just under an hour but by 4 p.m. power had been restored to all but 24, said Paul Griffo of Southern California Edison.

At 5 p.m. crews were working to restore power to the remaining area which is just off of Newport Boulevard.

“We don’t know the extent of the damage, and when we’ll be able to get power for the rest of the 24,” he said.

An updated condition on the worker was not available on Tuesday due to hospital and patient privacy laws. The Orange County coroner had not reported receiving any victims of electrocutions.
